FivewaysOnline.com have been approached by the community to extend our sorrow at the dreadful news of Mr Shah, also known as Mo, being stabbed whilst fending off robbers in his shop, Preston Foods, of Preston Drove, Brighton, earlier this week, and we wish him a speedy recovery from what could have been a far more serious incident. Get well soon Mo....+UPDATE+ October 2010 This case finally came to Court this week. Mr Shah is understandably distressed that no Custodial sentence was passed. Both boys appear to have been let off with a slapped wrist. Prison arguably doesn't work, but where a teenager of either 13 or 15 has the capacity to stab a shop owner who refuses to hand over money or goods under duress, surelay warrants a Custodial sentence. There is absolutely no deterrant to youths prepared to stab in any circumstances which produces two negative consequences; the Judiciary in the UK are out of control as much as the unruly teenagers are and that as a community we can not rely on such. Sooner or later a local business person will be killed by such actions, or someone taking matters into their hands will find themselves on the wrong side of the law. How a Judge of any description has reached this conclusion is astonishing, even in the context of the times we live in. It seems attempting to stab anyone in the Judiciaries eyes is perfectly reasonable behaviour not warranting custody....... See the full story here.

FOUR COMMUNITY EVENTS IN THE PARK
Blaker's Park, the community open space near Fiveways, Brighton, is to host two special public events during the Spring.
They happen on Sunday 15th May, beginning with the Open Art Exhibition, when everyone is welcome to bring along their own art and put it on display – and even to sell it. It starts at 12 noon and ends at 4pm.
Artists of all ages are welcomed – it's a friendly, supportive event to encourage everyone to feel good about their own creativity and that of their friends and family. All mediums are welcome – including painting, drawing, collage, photography, prints and etchings. Just bring a hook with which to hang it.
For the first time there will also be workshops, run by artists and teachers, in charcoal drawing. Some art materials will be provided but all artists are encouraged to bring sketchpads, watercolours, chalks and crayons to turn the park into a giant studio. Tutors will be on hand to give tips and advice. As an extra bonus and to turn Blaker's Park into Montmartre for one afternoon, everyone wearing a beret will get a drinks discount at the café! Smocks are optional!
On the same day, Sunday 15th May, a local arboriculturalist will lead a walking Tour of the Trees. This is back by popular demand after a highly successful guided tour of the park's 106 tree varieties in October. The tour will start at 2pm and last about an hour.
If the weather is bad on Sunday 15th may, both of the above events will be postponed for a week, until Sunday 22nd May.
Keep up to date with the news from Blaker's Park at www.BlakersPark.org.uk
